Hotels, new album(free mp3), tour dates

5.2.09

Hotels reside in Seattle although they used to be based in New York. They always sort of reminded me of great Factory Records band, the Stockholm Monsters. Rich Bennett of Monocle played/plays guitar for them when he's on the west coast or they're out here. They have a new album coming out on Hidden Shoal Recordings February 14th. here's a tune they've been giving away for free...

Hidden Shoal Recordings

The Heart

Perth’s mythic isolation is oft romanticised. The most isolated city in the world according to popular media. Whilst there is a thread in this romanticism that rings true, we think there is a more interesting notion of distance at play with our artists. Over the last 10 years we have witnessed a minor retreat from the stage to the home studio amongst our musical kin. It is this inner space and padding from the outside that has nurtured a purposeful and useful remoteness. A space where unresolved aesthetics gambol with an unrestrained playfulness. We embrace this space, as do our artists; each in their unique voice.

So much aural wonder lay around us and reached no further than one hundred people. “Lets make a device to hurtle our work into the world”, “sure….sure……yeh…..lets do that.” and thus Hidden Shoal Recordings was born early 2006 in Perth, Western Australia.

Just listen from a distance to the distance. Work it out later.

The Body

Hidden Shoal Recordings’ current catalogue includes releases that slip between the edges of experimental ambient work, shoegazing pop, post-rock and indie rock. The label has earned a reputation for releasing exciting and engaging new independent music unbound by genre or style. Hidden Shoal Recordings was recently chosen as one of the top ten favourite labels of 2007 by Textura magazine and has been dubbed “This generations 4AD” by prominent New York radio host DJ Mojo.

Monocle - Outer Sunset

11.2.08

Monocle released their debut back in Novemeber on Hidden Shoal Recordings and a big favorite round these parts.

here's a review from from Delusions of Adequacy
"For dreamy, slightly psychedelic, shoegazing indie pop, look no further. Monocle, a five-piece outfit from Brooklyn, has weaved together a pensive, stunning new album for Hidden Shoal Recordings. It plays like a soundtrack to a really good movie: the music, rather than hitting the listener in the face, floats out and gently reminds one that, yes, it’s still there.

Monocle’s Outer Sunset is an edgier version of Camera Obscura; Sunny Kim’s mysterious, secretive vocals are reminiscent of such bands, and Matt Filler’s haunting riffs could be in an Arcade Fire album. Keyboardist Rich Bennett wrote the majority of the songs, but drummer Max Goldman and bassist Dan Shuman are spectacularly talented as well. This warm, contemplative shoegaze pop is at its best on tracks like “Green Future,” “Emmanuelle,” and “Road Sign.” Outer Sunset has a subtle energy that flows almost tangibly throughout each track, and this understated approach does not lessen the impact, but rather renders it unmistakable. Multi-layered and involving, Outer Sunset manages to be avant-garde and accessible simultaneously, which is no small feat. Each song offers up something new, and “Wave Goodbye” stands out as possibly the strongest of the bunch.

Outer Sunset hits the shelves in early 2008, and Monocle has made a dazzling album. This is an ethereal, complex and simply excellent new release for HSR, and Monocle is a band to look out for in the future."
